How to Rank in ChatGPT if You Are a Chennai Business in 2026
ChatGPT does not have a ranking you can buy or a position you can lock in. It does choose which businesses to name, though, and a Chennai business can do a lot to be one of them. This is the practical version.
The honest starting point
If someone promises you a number one place in ChatGPT, they are selling certainty that nobody has. ChatGPT is not a list with fixed positions. Each answer is generated fresh, shaped by the question, the person’s history and settings, the time and whether the tool searched the web.
That does not make the work pointless. It changes the goal. Instead of “rank first”, aim for “be named more often, and be described accurately, across the questions your customers actually ask”. That is measurable and improvable.
ChatGPT matters for Chennai businesses because of scale. Sam Altman said in February 2026 that ChatGPT has 100 million weekly active users in India, its second largest market after the US. Many of those people ask it for recommendations: which agency, which clinic, which supplier. For the wider picture, read our guide to AI search visibility for Chennai businesses.
How ChatGPT decides what to say about a business
ChatGPT can answer a question about businesses in two ways.
- From what it learned in training. The model has absorbed a huge amount of text. For a small Chennai business this knowledge is often thin, out of date or mixed up with another business.
- By searching the web. When search is on, ChatGPT fetches pages and cites them. This is where a smaller business has the best chance to appear, because fresh, clear pages can be found even if the model never learned about you.
OpenAI publishes the names of its crawlers. According to its crawler documentation, OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT search results, GPTBot collects content that may be used for training, and ChatGPT-User visits pages when a person asks ChatGPT to look at them. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, but blocking OAI-SearchBot can. OpenAI notes that changes to robots.txt can take about a day to take effect.
OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula for which pages it prefers. So the sensible approach is to focus on what is controllable and observable, then test.
The seven steps, adapted for a Chennai business
1. Let ChatGPT’s search crawler in
Open your robots.txt and make sure nothing blocks OAI-SearchBot. Many security plugins and CDN rules block unfamiliar bots by default, so check those too. A simple allow rule looks like User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Allow: /. Also check that your important pages load without a login and are not hidden behind scripts that fail for crawlers.
2. Make “who you are” impossible to misread
Use one business name, one address format and one phone number everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. Write an About page that says, in plain sentences, what you do, where in Chennai you are, who runs it and since when. If your business has a Tamil name or alternate spelling, show both once.
3. Publish pages that answer buying questions directly
When people ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, they also ask follow-ups: how much, how long, how to choose, what is the difference. Create pages for those. Open each with a short direct answer, then explain. Use comparison tables where useful. Include a price range if you can, since “how much does X cost in Chennai” is one of the most common questions and most businesses refuse to answer it. A page that does answer it becomes easy to cite. Our guide on SEO pricing in Chennai is an example of the style.
4. State your Chennai location and areas plainly
Say “we serve Adyar, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur from our clinic on …” rather than “serving the greater Chennai region”. Landmarks help, because people describe places that way. For the process, see neighbourhood SEO in Chennai.
5. Earn mentions on other trusted sites
An AI tool that is trying to be accurate prefers a business that several independent sources describe consistently. Good targets include trade bodies, local press, industry directories, partner and supplier pages, college or event pages and review platforms. To find which ones matter in your field, ask ChatGPT and Google your own category questions and note which sites are cited. Those are your targets. Our guides on listing sites and link building help with this.
6. Collect real reviews and reply to them
Reviews give AI tools evidence about quality and about what you are known for. A review that says “the doctor explained the procedure clearly” tells a model something a star rating does not. Ask every satisfied customer, and reply to each review. See how to get Google reviews in Chennai.
7. Test, record and repeat
Build a list of prompts, run them on ChatGPT on a schedule and record what happens. This is the only way to know whether any of the above is working.
A worked example: a physiotherapy clinic in Adyar
This is a made-up example, to show how the steps fit together. It is not a client result.
A physiotherapy clinic near Adyar Signal asks ChatGPT, “best physiotherapist for knee pain in Adyar”. It is not named. The owner works through the list.
- Crawl: the site’s security plugin was blocking unknown bots. The owner whitelists OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot.
- Entity: the clinic appears as “Rao Physio” on the site, “Rao Physiotherapy Centre” on Google and “RaoPhysio Clinic” on a directory. The owner standardises on one name and one address format.
- Pages: the site has one “Services” page. The owner adds separate pages for knee pain, back pain and post-surgery rehab, each opening with a direct answer, a typical number of sessions and a price range.
- Location: the pages mention Adyar, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur and give the clinic’s position relative to a known landmark.
- Mentions: the owner asks a local hospital, a running club and two doctors who refer patients to link to the clinic and describe it accurately.
- Reviews: the clinic starts asking each patient after the third session and replies to every review.
After eight weeks the owner re-runs the same ten prompts. If the clinic begins to appear in a few, and the answer describes it correctly, the work is paying off. If not, the next step is to look at which sources ChatGPT cited instead and why they were chosen. That loop of test, change and re-test is the real skill.
If you sell beyond Chennai
Many Chennai companies sell to customers elsewhere: software firms, exporters, manufacturers, medical tourism providers and consultants. Their questions are not “near me”. They look like “best ERP implementation partner in India”, “leather exporters in Tamil Nadu” or “hospitals in Chennai for international patients”.
The same seven steps apply, with two adjustments. First, state your market clearly: the countries, industries and sizes you serve, not only your city. Second, find the third-party sources that rank those category lists, such as industry associations, export promotion bodies, B2B directories and review sites, and make sure you are described accurately on them. Chennai is a real advantage here. Wikipedia’s summary of the city notes that it produces a large share of India’s auto components and leather exports and has become a major IT and SaaS centre. Say that you are based in Chennai, because buyers searching for a supplier in those fields often search for the city by name.

The prompts to test, by type
Use a mix so you see more than one kind of visibility.
| Type | Example for a Chennai business | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | “Best physiotherapy clinic in Adyar” or “recommend a CA firm in Chennai for startups” | Whether you are in the shortlist at all |
| Comparison | “Compare [your brand] and [competitor] in Chennai” | How you are described next to others |
| Cost | “How much does [service] cost in Chennai?” | Whether your pricing pages are used |
| Problem-led | “My website gets no traffic, what should I do?” | Whether your guides are cited as sources |
| Brand | “What does [your brand] do?” | Whether ChatGPT knows you and gets the facts right |
| Language | The same discovery question in Tamil or Tanglish | Whether your Tamil content exists and is found |
Run each prompt in a fresh chat. Note the date. Repeat every two weeks. Record whether you were named, whether you were linked, which competitors appeared and whether the facts about you were right. Because answers vary, judge trends over a dozen or more prompts rather than any single result. Our AI visibility audit guide has a fuller template.
What realistic progress looks like
We track this on our own site, and our results are a good reminder of how uneven it is. In our self-reported AI visibility case study, we tracked 30 queries across four platforms for 24 weeks. Perplexity went from 0 of 30 to 21 of 30, Google AI Overviews from 3 to 17, Gemini from 0 to 11, and ChatGPT from 0 to 4. That is one site, measured by us, so please do not treat it as a benchmark. What it shows is that the platforms respond differently, and ChatGPT was the slowest of the four for us.
That fits what you would expect. ChatGPT is both the most talked-about tool and one of the harder ones to influence quickly, because it blends training knowledge with live search and does not publish how it picks sources.
What not to do
- Do not hide text for AI. White text on a white background or instructions aimed at models are the kind of thing that can get a site penalised and will not build trust.
- Do not pay for fake listicles. Low-quality “top 10” pages that name you are weak evidence and may be ignored.
- Do not buy reviews. They break platform rules, and AI tools increasingly weigh consistency.
- Do not claim what you cannot show. If your page says “number one in Chennai” and nothing backs it up, a careful tool will skip it.
- Do not neglect Google. Google still holds 98% of search in India according to StatCounter, and its AI features draw on your Google SEO. Our guide to AI SEO versus traditional SEO explains how the two connect.
What to do this week
- Open your robots.txt and check for any rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot.
- Write ten prompts that your real customers would type.
- Run them in ChatGPT, record who is named and which sources are cited.
- Fix the About page and the three most important service pages.
- Pick two sources that ChatGPT already cites for your category and work out how to be mentioned there.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. There is no paid placement in ChatGPT answers that a business can buy to be named organically. Be wary of anyone who sells one.
How do I get my Chennai business to appear in ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot, keep your business details consistent, publish pages that answer buying questions, get mentioned on trusted sites, collect reviews and test a fixed prompt list over time.
Does blocking GPTBot hide me from ChatGPT?
OpenAI says GPTBot is used for training, while OAI-SearchBot handles search. Blocking GPTBot does not stop search inclusion, but blocking OAI-SearchBot can.
How long does it take to show up?
Crawl access fixes can show within days to weeks. Reliable mentions usually take months because they depend on third-party sources and reviews.
Does ChatGPT understand Tamil queries?
It can answer in Tamil. Whether your business appears depends on whether you have clear Tamil or bilingual content and mentions. See our Tamil SEO guide.
Is ranking in ChatGPT the same as ranking on Google?
No, but they overlap. Many of the foundations, such as clear pages, reviews and trusted mentions, help both.
