How to Choose an AI SEO Agency in Chennai: 10 Questions and Red Flags
“AI SEO” has become the most overused phrase in agency marketing. Some of it is real work and some of it is old SEO with a new label. This guide gives you ten questions that separate the two, plus a table of common claims and what is actually true.
What an AI SEO agency should actually do
AI SEO, also called AI visibility, GEO, AEO or LLMO depending on who is selling it, is the work of making your business easier for AI tools to find, understand and recommend. Those tools include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. If you want the definitions, our guides to GEO, AEO and LLMO explain each one, and our complete guide to AI visibility puts them together.
In practice, a competent agency does six things.
- Measures first. It builds a list of real customer prompts and records which brands the AI tools name and cite today.
- Fixes access. It checks that crawlers such as Googlebot and OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot are not blocked, and that important pages are indexable.
- Clarifies your entity. It makes your business name, location, services and people consistent across your site, profile and listings.
- Improves the pages AI tools might cite. It rewrites key pages to answer questions directly, with evidence.
- Earns third-party mentions. It works on reviews, directories, press and partner pages.
- Reports honestly. It shows changes over time, with dates, platforms and variation.
Everything else is decoration.
Common claims, and what is actually true
| What an agency might say | What the evidence says | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| “We guarantee you will be in ChatGPT.” | No one controls ChatGPT’s answers. OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula. | “What do you do if we are not named after three months?” |
| “We have a proprietary method Google does not publish.” | Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible. | “What exactly is proprietary, and how do you know it works?” |
| “Block the AI bots to protect your content.” | OpenAI says GPTBot is for training, OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search. Blocking the search crawler can keep you out of ChatGPT search. | “Which crawlers do you recommend allowing and why?” |
| “AI search has replaced Google.” | Google still holds 98.06% of search in India per StatCounter, October 2026. ChatGPT has about 100 million weekly users in India per TechCrunch. Both matter. | “How do you split effort between Google and other AI tools?” |
| “Here is a screenshot where we rank number one.” | AI answers vary by person, place and time. One screenshot proves little. | “Can I see tracked results across many prompts and dates?” |
| “SEO is dead, you only need GEO.” | Google’s AI features draw on its normal search systems, so classic SEO remains the base. | “What SEO work do you include?” |
The ten questions to ask
1. Which prompts will you track for me, and who chooses them?
A good answer: 25 to 30 real customer questions chosen with you, in the words your customers use, including some in Tamil or Tanglish if relevant. A bad answer: “we track your brand name”. Tracking your own name only tells you whether the AI knows you exist.
2. On which platforms, and how often?
You want Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity at minimum, checked on a regular schedule such as every two weeks. Ask whether the checks are manual, tool-based or both.
3. How do you handle the fact that answers change?
Honest agencies repeat each prompt several times, record the range, and report trends over a whole prompt set rather than celebrating one lucky run.
4. What will you change on my website?
Expect specifics: which pages, which questions they will answer, which schema they will add, what they will fix technically. “We will optimise your content for AI” is not a plan.
5. What will you do off my website?
AI tools cross-check sources. Ask about reviews, directories, press and partner mentions, and what is realistic for a Chennai business in your field. See our guide on ranking in ChatGPT as a Chennai business for the sort of plan to expect.
6. What does month one deliver?
A baseline report, a technical access check, an entity audit and a prioritised list. If month one is only “onboarding”, that is a warning sign.
7. How is this different from the SEO you already do?
The honest answer is that it builds on it. Ask what is genuinely new, such as prompt tracking and entity work, and what is shared. Our article on AI SEO versus traditional SEO sets out the overlap.
8. Who does the work, and what tools do they use?
Ask for names and roles. Ask whether they use a tracking tool, which one, and whether you will have access to the data.
9. What would count as success, and what would count as failure?
Good agencies define it before they start: for example, being named in a certain share of tracked prompts, or being cited on key questions, plus the enquiry numbers that matter. They also say when they would tell you to stop.
10. What happens if I leave?
You should own your accounts, your content and your tracking data, with a short notice period. Month to month is the safest structure.
What AI SEO costs in Chennai
Published AI SEO prices are scarcer than classic SEO prices, so treat any comparison with care. Some data points we could verify on 4 November 2026:
| Provider | Published figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| GetCito (Noida head office), Growth plan | $599 a month | GEO software with agency services |
| GetCito, Scale plan | $999 a month | Same, higher tier |
| DigeHub, Growth plan | ₹65,000 to ₹1,20,000 a month | SEO plus LLMO, GEO and AEO, with reporting |
| DigeHub, Enterprise | From ₹1,20,000 a month | Adds dedicated team and link building |
Notice that AI visibility is rarely sold cheaply on its own, because the work overlaps heavily with SEO. If a quote for “AI SEO” is far below normal SEO prices, ask what it excludes. Our SEO pricing guide for Chennai shows how scope drives price, and the national view is in our AI visibility service cost guide.
Tool, agency or both?
Some providers are mainly software that tracks AI mentions. Others are agencies that do the work. Some are both. A tracking tool tells you where you stand. It does not change anything. An agency changes things, but you need data to know whether it worked.
- If you have an in-house team that can write and publish, a tool may be enough.
- If you do not, you need people to do the work, and tracking can be part of the service.
- Whichever you choose, insist that the tracking data belongs to you.
What a good AI visibility report looks like
You can judge an agency quickly by the sample report it shows you. A useful one has these parts.
| Section | What it contains | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt list | 25 to 30 real questions, grouped by type, with the date each was run | Without it, nothing can be compared over time |
| Platform coverage | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, with location and settings noted | Platforms behave differently |
| Named and cited | For each prompt, whether you were named, whether you were cited, and which competitors appeared | Mentions and citations are different outcomes |
| Accuracy check | Whether the facts stated about your business were right | A wrong description can cost you leads |
| Changes made | A dated list of what was changed on the site and elsewhere | Links effort to outcome |
| Business outcome | Enquiries and traffic from search and AI referrals, where measurable | Visibility only matters if it leads somewhere |
| Next steps | The next month’s priorities and the reasons for them | Shows the agency is thinking, not just reporting |
If a sample report has glossy charts but no prompt list, no dates and no competitor view, you are looking at marketing, not measurement.
Chennai-specific things to check
A Chennai business has a few extra points that a generic AI SEO pitch will miss.
- Tamil and Tanglish prompts. Google added Tamil to AI Mode in October 2025, so customers can now ask in Tamil. Ask whether the agency will test some prompts in Tamil or Tanglish and whether it can produce quality Tamil content. See our Tamil SEO guide.
- Local entities. Chennai businesses often share names or use several spellings. Ask how the agency will make sure AI tools do not mix you up with another business.
- Neighbourhood coverage. For local businesses, AI tools lean on Business Profile and reviews. Ask how the plan covers the neighbourhoods you serve. See neighbourhood SEO in Chennai.
- Industries beyond the city. If you sell software, components or services across India or abroad, ask how the agency will build visibility for category questions, not just local ones.
- A real local presence. You want people who can meet you and understand the market. Compare what is publicly verifiable in our Chennai SEO company comparison.
A simple rubric for comparing proposals
Give each proposal a score from 0 to 2 on each line, where 0 means missing, 1 means vague and 2 means specific.
- Prompts and platforms are named and agreed with you.
- The first 30 days include a baseline, an access check and an entity audit.
- Changes are listed by page and by type of work.
- Measurement includes repeat runs, dates and accuracy checks.
- Business outcomes are tracked, not only mentions.
- No guarantees are made, and the proposal says what happens if results are slow.
- Ownership and exit are clear, with data and accounts yours.
Fourteen points is the maximum. A proposal under eight is usually a template. Treat the score as a conversation starter, not as a formula.
Red flags to walk away from
- A guaranteed place in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI.
- A secret method that cannot be explained.
- Proof that is one screenshot with no date, prompt or location.
- Reports made only of “AI mentions” with no prompt list.
- A suggestion to block AI crawlers without explaining the effect on search inclusion.
- Paid listicles presented as “AI optimisation”.
- A long lock-in contract for a service that is still changing fast.
If you also want the general vetting questions that apply to any SEO provider, use our eight questions to ask an SEO agency in Chennai.
A sensible way to start: a 30-day audit
Before you commit to a retainer, ask for a one-off audit. A good audit takes about a month and gives you a prompt list, dated results across platforms, a technical access check, an entity review, and a ranked list of fixes. You can then decide whether to do the work yourself or hire. Our guide to the AI visibility audit for Chennai businesses shows what a good one contains, so you can judge any offer you receive.
How DigeHub answers these questions
It would be unfair to write this and not answer them ourselves.
- Prompts and platforms: a fixed list agreed with you, across Google AI, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, checked on a schedule.
- Proof: we show dated screenshots and say what they do and do not prove, as in our case study page. In one of our own screenshots we appear only as a cited source and not named in the answer, and we include it.
- Method: access checks, entity clean-up, answer-first pages, reviews and mentions. Nothing secret.
- Price: included in our growth plan at ₹65,000 to ₹1,20,000 a month, month to month.
- Guarantees: none. Our AI SEO agency page has the scope.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if an AI SEO agency is legitimate?
Ask which prompts and platforms they track, how often, and for dated results across many prompts. Legitimate agencies explain their method and admit that results vary.
Can an agency guarantee I appear in ChatGPT?
No. Nobody controls ChatGPT answers, and OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula for them.
Is AI SEO different from normal SEO?
It builds on it. Google says its AI features need no special optimisation beyond indexing and snippet eligibility, so strong SEO is the base.
How much should AI SEO cost in Chennai?
Published data is limited. Our growth plan including it is ₹65,000 to ₹1,20,000 a month. Compare scope and what is included rather than the total.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Not without understanding the effect. OpenAI says blocking OAI-SearchBot can keep you out of ChatGPT search, while GPTBot relates to training.
Do I need an agency or just a tool?
A tool shows where you stand. An agency changes things. If you cannot publish and fix pages yourself, you need people as well as data.
