Technical SEO for Chennai Websites 2026: The Complete Checklist

Technical SEO is the plumbing: if Google and AI crawlers cannot reach, load and understand your pages, nothing else you do will count. This checklist covers every check we run on a Chennai business website, with how to test each one and what a pass looks like.

How to use this checklist

You do not need to be a developer to run most of these checks. You need free tools and an hour. Work through the sections in order, because a problem early on, such as a page blocked from crawling, makes later checks pointless.

The free tools we use:

  • Google Search Console for indexing, Core Web Vitals and crawl data. If you do not have it set up, do that first.
  • PageSpeed Insights for speed on mobile and desktop.
  • Rich Results Test for structured data.
  • A crawler such as Screaming Frog, which is free for up to 500 URLs, for site-wide issues.
  • Your browser’s developer tools for quick checks on redirects and headers.

This sits alongside our on-page SEO checklist, which covers what is written on each page, and our technical SEO guide for Indian websites, which is the national overview. Here we concentrate on what Chennai sites typically get wrong.

1. Crawling and indexing

If a page is not indexed, it cannot rank. If a crawler is blocked, it cannot even see the page.

CheckHow to testWhat a pass looks like
Important pages are indexedSearch Console, Pages report; or search your page URL in the URL Inspection toolEvery service, location and product page shows as indexed
No accidental noindexCheck page source for a robots meta tag; check the setting “Discourage search engines” in WordPressNo noindex on pages you want found
robots.txt is not blocking key sectionsOpen yoursite.com/robots.txtNo “Disallow: /” and no blocks on CSS, JS or key folders
Googlebot can fetch pagesURL Inspection, Live testPage fetched and rendered
XML sitemap exists and is submittedOpen yoursite.com/sitemap.xml; check Search Console SitemapsSitemap lists only indexable, canonical, 200-status URLs
One version of the siteTry http, https, www and non-www variantsAll redirect with a 301 to one preferred version
Canonical tags are correctView source or crawlEach page points to itself unless a deliberate duplicate
No long redirect chainsCrawl; check redirectsOne hop at most
404s are handledCrawl for 4xx errorsBroken internal links fixed; deleted pages redirected where a close match exists

AI crawlers

Check that AI search crawlers are not blocked by accident. OpenAI’s crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot is for training, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages on behalf of users. Blocking GPTBot does not affect search inclusion, but blocking OAI-SearchBot can. Google’s AI features need no special tags: its documentation says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Many security plugins and CDN firewalls block unfamiliar bots by default, so test, do not assume.

2. Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-user experience with three Core Web Vitals. The thresholds, from web.dev, apply at the 75th percentile of page loads:

MetricWhat it measuresGood threshold
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)How fast the main content appears2.5 seconds or less
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks200 milliseconds or less
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)How much the layout jumps while loading0.1 or less

Test your key pages on mobile in PageSpeed Insights, then look at the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console for real-user data. Wikipedia notes that Chennai had the highest average broadband speed among Indian cities in a 2022 measurement, but your visitors are mostly on phones and mobile networks, which can be much slower, so test on a throttled mobile connection.

The usual causes on Chennai business sites

  • Heavy page builders and themes that load large amounts of unused code.
  • Huge images uploaded straight from a phone or camera. Compress them and use modern formats.
  • Too many plugins, each adding scripts and styles.
  • Cheap shared hosting with slow server response. Check time to first byte.
  • Third-party scripts, such as chat widgets, pop-ups, multiple trackers and embedded videos.
  • No caching or CDN. A content delivery network helps visitors beyond Chennai, and a caching layer helps everyone.
  • Fonts and layout shifts. Reserve space for images and ads, and load fonts efficiently.

For reference, our own AI visibility case study reports a server response improvement from 890 ms to 380 ms on our site over the course of that project, which we mention as one data point and not a benchmark.

3. Mobile experience

India has about 958 million internet users, according to the IAMAI and Kantar report covered by Business Today, and most of them use phones. Google indexes the mobile version of your pages, so if the mobile version hides content, that content may not count.

  • The viewport tag is set and the page fits the screen without horizontal scrolling.
  • Text is readable without zooming, and tap targets are not crammed together.
  • A tap-to-call button and a WhatsApp link are visible without scrolling on service pages.
  • Pop-ups and banners do not cover the main content.
  • Content on mobile matches desktop, including headings, text and structured data.
  • Forms are short and work with a phone keyboard.

4. Site structure and internal links

  • Clean URLs. Short, readable, in lower case, for example /dental-implants-adyar/ and not /?p=1234.
  • Logical hierarchy. Home, then main service or category, then specific pages. Important pages within three clicks of the home page.
  • No orphan pages. Every page should be linked from at least one other page.
  • Descriptive anchor text. Link with words that say what the page is, not “click here”.
  • Breadcrumbs on deeper pages, which help users and search engines.
  • No thin tag and archive pages indexed in bulk. On WordPress, tag and author archives often create low-value duplicates.
  • Pagination and filters on ecommerce sites do not create endless URL combinations.

Internal links are also how you pass strength to important pages. Our guide to neighbourhood SEO shows how to link area pages to service pages without creating clutter.

5. Structured data

Structured data helps machines understand who you are and what a page is about. Use JSON-LD, which Google recommends, and make sure the markup matches what visitors can see.

  • Organization or LocalBusiness on the home page, with the same name, address, phone number and opening hours as your Business Profile.
  • Product and Review markup for ecommerce, where the content is real and visible.
  • Article markup on blog posts, with a named author.
  • BreadcrumbList where breadcrumbs exist.

Validate with the Rich Results Test and fix warnings that apply to you. A note on FAQ markup: Google has reduced FAQ rich results for most sites, so add FAQs because they help readers and AI tools, not for a guaranteed rich result. For how structured data connects to AI answers, read our schema markup guide.

6. Language, Tamil pages and hreflang

Tamil is the first language of about 78% of Chennai residents per Wikipedia’s census summary, and Google added Tamil to AI Mode in October 2025. If you publish Tamil content, set it up properly.

  • Use the right language attribute on each page, for example lang=”ta” for Tamil and lang=”en” for English.
  • Give each language its own URL, such as /ta/service-name/, rather than swapping text with a script.
  • Use hreflang annotations to connect equivalent pages, with each page pointing back to the other.
  • Write Tamil content natively. Do not publish raw machine translation.
  • Use fonts that render Tamil script cleanly on mobile.

See Tamil SEO for Chennai businesses for strategy beyond the technical settings.

7. Security and hygiene

  • HTTPS everywhere, with a valid certificate and no mixed content.
  • Software updated. Out-of-date WordPress themes and plugins are a common route for hacks that inject spam pages.
  • No unexpected pages. Search “site:yourdomain.com” and look for pages you did not create, such as pharmacy or casino spam.
  • Backups that you have tested.
  • Clean demo content. Remove sample pages and placeholder text left by themes.
  • Images with alt text, sensible file names and set dimensions, to prevent layout shifts.

8. JavaScript and rendering

If your site is built with a JavaScript framework or loads key content through scripts, check what Google actually sees. Use the URL Inspection tool to view the rendered HTML, and confirm your main text, links and headings appear in it. AI crawlers may handle scripts less well than Google, so server-rendered or static content is the safest option for important pages. Avoid putting essential text in images, and avoid content that only appears after a click or a scroll.

The WordPress problems we see most often

Most small business sites in Chennai run on WordPress, and the same issues appear again and again.

  • The “discourage search engines” box is ticked. It is often switched on during development and never turned off. It adds a noindex instruction to the whole site.
  • Several SEO plugins at once. Two plugins writing titles, canonical tags and schema create conflicts and duplicates. Use one.
  • Default permalinks. URLs like /?p=123 carry no meaning. Switch to readable permalinks and redirect the old ones.
  • Staging site indexed. A test copy of the site left open to search engines competes with the live one.
  • Attachment pages indexed. WordPress can create a separate page for every image, each with almost no content.
  • Unused themes and plugins left installed. They add risk and sometimes load code even when inactive.
  • Sliders and heavy animations on the home page, which hurt LCP.

Extra checks for online stores

Ecommerce sites add their own technical risks.

  • Filters and sort options that create thousands of near-duplicate URLs. Control them with canonical tags or by blocking low-value combinations.
  • Out-of-stock and discontinued products. Keep the page and show alternatives if the product may return, or redirect to the closest category if it will not.
  • Product schema with price, availability and review markup that match what the page shows.
  • Category pages with unique text and sensible internal links, not just a grid of products.
  • Fast, light product images, using lazy loading for images below the fold but not for the main image that determines LCP.

A 15-minute triage you can run today

If you only have a quarter of an hour, do these six things.

  1. Search “site:yourdomain.com” and check the number of results is roughly what you expect, with no strange pages.
  2. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for “Disallow: /”.
  3. Run your home page and your top service page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile and note the scores.
  4. Open Search Console, Pages report, and read the reasons for “not indexed”.
  5. Type http://yourdomain.com and the www version into your browser and see whether they land on one https address.
  6. Open your site on a phone and check you can call or message you in one tap.

Write down what you find. Even a short list gives you something concrete to take to a developer or to an agency, and makes the conversation about fixes, not mystery.

9. Monitoring so problems do not return

  1. Turn on Search Console email alerts for indexing and Core Web Vitals issues.
  2. Check the Pages and Core Web Vitals reports monthly, and after any site change.
  3. Run a crawl quarterly to catch broken links, redirect chains and duplicates.
  4. Test before and after redesigns. Record your top pages and their URLs, and set up redirects before launch.
  5. Keep a change log. Note what changed and when, so a traffic drop can be traced.

What to fix first

If your list is long, fix in this order, because each step makes the next one count.

  1. Anything that blocks indexing: noindex, robots.txt rules, broken sitemap, canonical mistakes.
  2. One preferred version of the site, with redirects.
  3. Mobile usability and a visible phone or WhatsApp button.
  4. Speed on your top five pages.
  5. Duplicate and thin pages.
  6. Structured data for your business and key pages.
  7. Language setup, if you publish in Tamil.
  8. Monitoring.

If you would like this done for you, technical fixes are part of our starter plan from ₹40,000 a month, as listed on our SEO agency in Chennai page. For the wider picture of what order to work in, see how to rank on Google in Chennai.

Frequently asked questions

What is technical SEO?

It is the work of making sure search engines and AI crawlers can find, load, understand and index your pages, covering crawling, speed, mobile experience, structure, structured data and security.

What are Core Web Vitals thresholds?

Google’s good thresholds are LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile.

Can I do technical SEO myself?

Many checks are free and simple, such as indexing, sitemaps and mobile checks. Speed work and structural fixes may need a developer.

Should I block AI bots?

Not without understanding the effect. OpenAI says blocking OAI-SearchBot can keep you out of ChatGPT search, while GPTBot relates to training.

Why is my WordPress site slow?

Common causes are heavy themes and page builders, large images, too many plugins, weak hosting and third-party scripts.

How often should I run a technical audit?

A quick Search Console check monthly and a full crawl quarterly, plus a check after any redesign or migration.
