Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) for Chennai Businesses: How to Become the Answer
People increasingly ask a question and expect a direct answer, from Google, a voice assistant or a chatbot. AEO is the craft of writing pages that give that answer clearly enough to be used. Here is how to do it properly, including a recent change that many guides have not caught up with.
What AEO is, in plain terms
Answer engine optimization is the practice of writing and organising content so that a search engine or AI assistant can find a clear answer in it and present it to the person who asked. The “answer engine” might be a featured snippet on Google, the AI Overview above the results, a voice reply, or a conversational tool such as ChatGPT or Perplexity.
The concept is older than the current AI wave. Featured snippets and “People also ask” boxes have rewarded direct answers for years. What has changed is the number of places that give answers instead of links. We explain the relationship between this and its neighbours in what is answer engine optimization, and in our guides to GEO and LLMO. Put simply: AEO is about the question and the answer, GEO is about getting used in generated responses, and LLMO is about how you are described.
What Google says about featured snippets
Google’s help page on featured snippets contains one sentence that every AEO plan should respect: you cannot request one. Google’s systems decide whether a page makes a good featured snippet for a given search. There is no special markup for them either. The page explains that clicking a featured snippet takes the user to the matching section of your page, so clear sectioning helps.
That has two practical consequences. First, any provider selling a “featured snippet guarantee” is guessing. Second, the controllable part is the quality and clarity of your answer. If you do not want your content used this way, Google provides controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, though they limit all snippets, not only featured ones.
A recent change: FAQ rich results are gone
For years, agencies added FAQ markup to pages in the hope of expanding results with dropdown questions. Google’s own structured data documentation now records that the FAQ rich result feature is no longer shown in Google Search results, with the deprecation announced in May 2026 and a June 2026 entry confirming it. That means FAQ markup no longer produces that visual result in Google. Questions and answers are still very valuable on the page, for readers and for answer extraction, but you should not pay for markup because of the old rich result. If a provider is still selling it as a ranking boost, ask what exactly they expect it to do.
How to write an answer that can be used
- Put the question in a heading, worded the way a customer would say it. “How much does a root canal cost in Chennai” works better than “Treatment costs”.
- Answer in the first sentence or two. Give the direct answer with a specific figure or fact, then add conditions and detail below.
- Match the format to the question. A definition for “what is”, a list for “best ways”, numbered steps for “how to”, a table for comparisons, a range with caveats for “how much”.
- Be honest about uncertainty. “Usually between X and Y, depending on Z” is more trustworthy and more useful than a false precise number.
- Add evidence. Name the source of figures and link to it.
- Keep one idea per section, so a passage makes sense on its own when lifted out.
- Update it. Show a last updated date and keep the facts current.
| Question type | Best answer format | Chennai example |
|---|---|---|
| What is | One-sentence definition, then context | What is a GST composition scheme for small traders |
| How much | Range, what changes it, a small table | How much does a website cost for a Chennai clinic |
| How to | Numbered steps with time estimates | How to register a trade licence in Chennai |
| Best / which | Short criteria list, then a comparison table | Which CA firm is best for a startup in OMR |
| Near me / where | Area list, address, hours, map | Where to buy industrial valves in Ambattur |
| Is it worth it / should I | A direct verdict with conditions | Is a Tamil website worth it for a local shop |
These are example question shapes. Check the regulations and costs before you publish an answer on any of them, because a wrong answer in your name does harm.
A before and after: one answer rewritten
This is an invented example to show the technique, not real data. Imagine a Chennai accounting firm with a page about GST registration.
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Heading: GST services We offer complete GST solutions for all your business needs with experienced professionals. Contact us for a free consultation. | Heading: How long does GST registration take for a new Chennai business If your documents are complete, registration is usually completed within a few working days, though it can take longer if the officer asks for clarification. Keep your PAN, Aadhaar, proof of business address and bank details ready. We list each step below, the common reasons for delay and what we charge to file on your behalf. |
The second version names the question, answers it in the first sentence, flags a condition honestly, lists what the reader needs and promises specifics below. A snippet system, an AI tool or a human skimming on a phone can use it immediately. Check any timelines against the current official portal before publishing, since rules and processing times change.
Finding the questions Chennai customers really ask
Do not guess. Collect real questions from several places.
- Your own enquiries. Sales calls, WhatsApp messages and emails are the best source. Note the exact words people use.
- Search Console. Look at the Queries report for long, question-like searches that already show impressions.
- Google’s suggestions. Autocomplete and “People also ask” show how a topic branches.
- Reviews and forums. Customers describe their problems in their own words.
- Your competitors’ FAQ pages, to find gaps rather than to copy.
Then group them by stage: learning (“what is”), comparing (“which is better”), pricing (“how much”) and buying (“near me”, “book”). Pricing questions are the ones most businesses avoid, and answering them honestly is often the easiest way to stand out. Our SEO pricing guide for Chennai is an example of publishing numbers rather than hiding them.
Local answers and voice questions
Many Chennai questions are local: “near me”, “open now”, “in Anna Nagar”. The answer to these often comes from your Google Business Profile rather than your website, so keep hours, categories, services and photos current. On your site, create a clear page per service and, where you genuinely serve different areas, state them in plain text with the real address and a map. Do not clone one page across fifty neighbourhoods. See Chennai neighbourhood SEO for how to do this properly.
Voice and conversational questions tend to be longer and more natural, and in Chennai they are often in Tamil or a mix of Tamil and English. Google added Tamil to AI Mode in October 2025. A clear Tamil answer to a question that few competitors answer in Tamil is a real opportunity. Read Tamil SEO in Chennai before you start, and have a native speaker write it.
What answer content looks like for different Chennai businesses
| Business | Questions worth answering | What makes the answer strong |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic or hospital | Cost ranges, recovery time, when to see a doctor, what to bring | Named clinician, plain language, honest ranges, no exaggerated claims |
| Manufacturer or supplier | Lead times, minimum order, materials, standards, shipping to other states | Specifications, certifications, real examples, downloadable data sheets |
| Professional services | Fees, timelines, documents needed, common mistakes | Step lists, a worked example, a clear note on what varies |
| Retail or restaurant | Hours, parking, menu or range, delivery area, offers | Accurate profile, photos, a clear page per location |
| IT and SaaS | Pricing, integrations, security, comparisons | Honest comparison tables, documentation, a visible changelog |
In every case the winning habit is the same: say what you actually know, with specifics, and say what depends on circumstances.
A 30-day AEO plan
- Week 1. Collect 30 real questions from enquiries, Search Console and autocomplete. Group them by stage and pick ten.
- Week 2. Rewrite or create answers for the first five, using the question as a heading and the answer in the first two sentences.
- Week 3. Write the other five. Add sources, a named author, and links between the answers and your service pages.
- Week 4. Test the questions in Google and the main AI tools, record the results, and fix the weakest answers.
Repeat monthly. Over a quarter, you will have a library of tested answers, which is also the best raw material for sales conversations.
Building a question hub on your site
A practical structure is a hub page for each service area that answers the top ten questions briefly and links to a deeper page for each. Within each deeper page, one question gets a full answer with evidence.
- The hub gives a map of everything you know about the topic.
- The deep pages are the ones that earn snippets and citations.
- Internal links connect them, which also helps crawlers understand the structure. See the on-page SEO checklist for internal linking basics.
Our own cluster of Chennai guides is built this way, with the SEO agency page as the hub and the guides as deep answers.
How to measure AEO
Classic rank tracking is not enough. Use a small set of measures.
- Search Console impressions for question queries. Filter the Queries report for words like how, what, why, cost and best, and track impressions and clicks over time.
- Snippet and “People also ask” appearances. Check a fixed list of questions manually each month, or use a rank tracker that records SERP features.
- AI answer presence. Ask the same questions in Google’s AI features, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and record whether you are named or cited.
- Leads from answer pages. Track enquiries that start on question pages, since clicks may fall even when value rises.
The monthly routine is described in our AI visibility audit guide.
Common AEO mistakes
- Burying the answer. Three paragraphs of introduction before the point loses both readers and extractors.
- Writing for snippets only. A page that is only a list of thin answers does not build trust. Give depth for the reader who clicks.
- Copying competitors’ wording. Systems prefer distinctive, well-sourced pages.
- Relying on markup. Structured data helps understanding, but, as the FAQ change shows, features can be retired. Content quality is permanent.
- Stale answers. Prices and rules change. An outdated answer can hurt your credibility.

Frequently asked questions
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization is writing and structuring content so search engines and AI tools can pull a clear, correct answer from it.
Can I request a featured snippet?
No. Google says its systems decide whether a page makes a good featured snippet. You can only make your answer clear and useful.
Does FAQ schema still work?
Google has retired the FAQ rich result, so the markup no longer produces it in Search. Keep question and answer content on the page for readers, but do not expect the old dropdown result.
How long should an answer be?
As long as it needs to be to answer fully, with the direct answer in the first sentence or two and detail after.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It is part of SEO. It focuses on questions and direct answers, and it uses the same foundations of crawlability, trust and helpful content.
Should I write answers in Tamil?
If your customers ask in Tamil, yes, provided a native speaker writes them well. Fewer competitors answer in Tamil, which can create an opening.
